Getting the heat right
When you’re working with PET preforms, it’s a balancing act. You need that short-wave infrared energy to hit the glass transition temperature perfectly. Too little, and the bottle is a mess. Too much, and you’re scorching the plastic. Depending on your oven, we usually build these for 230V or 400V setups. The goal is simple: high wattage per millimeter. If you’re running a 2500W tube, you’ve got the heat density to keep your cycle times fast. But here is a pro tip: check your reflectors. If they’re pitted or oxidized, it doesn’t matter how good the lamp is—you’re just throwing energy away.
The nuts and bolts (and quartz)
We use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because when things get hot, cheap tubes bow. Ours stay straight. Most of these use R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re standard, but we’re obsessive about the tolerances. We make sure they seat firmly in the socket. If the connection is loose, you get arcing. That’s a one-way ticket to a burnt-out socket and a dead lamp. You can choose between clear or coated. The coated ones are great because they help the heat penetrate the PET wall better. Just be a bit more careful when you’re sliding them in—they’re a little more fragile.
Getting them on the floor
The best part? These are true drop-ins. You don’t need to call in an electrician to rewire the oven or spend an hour messing with PLC settings. Just swap out the dead tubes, double-check that the contact tension is tight, and you’re back in business. One last thing: keep your cooling blowers clean. Dust and debris are the enemy here. If the airflow stops, the housing overheats, and your expensive quartz glass won’t last nearly as long as it should.
