
Stop Wasting Heat: A Better Way to Bake
Most bread ovens are energy hogs. They bleed power while they’re warming up and trying to find a steady temperature. We decided to fix that by using shortwave infrared bulbs. Here’s the difference: standard heating elements waste time heating up the air around the bread. Infrared bulbs don’t bother with the middleman. They beam energy directly into the dough.
Why Speed Actually Saves You Money
If you use a bulb with low thermal mass, you get what we call “second-level response.” In plain English? The heat reacts almost the second your controller tells it to. Standard ovens have a habit of “overshooting.” The element stays scorching hot even after the thermostat clicks off, which means you’re basically fighting your own oven to keep it from getting too hot. You end up wasting energy just idling or trying to cool the chamber back down. Our bulbs kill that lag. The moment the sensor hits your target temperature, the heat stops.**Period.**No more burnt edges or wasted kilowatts per batch.
The Nitty-Gritty on the Build
We use high-purity quartz for the envelopes. Why? Because these bulbs cycle on and off rapidly, and quartz can handle that kind of thermal shock without cracking. We also tuned the filaments to specific wavelengths. This lets the heat soak deep into the center of the loaf so it’s actually cooked through, while the crust stays perfect. On the practical side, we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. If one goes out, you can swap it in seconds. Plus, they’re compact, so you can fit a lot of heating power into a small space.
A Couple of Warnings
Look, high-density infrared heat is powerful stuff. It’s aggressive. If you just wire these in without a proper PID controller or a Solid State Relay (SSR), you’re going to fry your filaments. The rapid cycling is exactly what makes this work, but your electrical gear has to be tough enough to handle that kind of switching. And one more thing: watch your airflow. If your cooling fans aren’t aimed right to protect the socket housing, the ambient heat will eventually eat through your wiring. Keep it cool, and these things will last.
